4 Things to Do in Kawaguchiko on a Budget, According to the Locals

Are you traveling to Japan soon?

Japan is one of the most amazing places in the world to travel around. With lush greenery, beautiful lakes, and imposing mountains on top of the buzzing cities, there’s truly a little bit of something for everyone.

Today, we’re going to be talking about the gorgeous resort town of Kawaguchiko, at the foot of Mount Fuji. Although you could make a day of staring at this majestic mountain, finding other things to do in Kawaguchiko isn’t hard. Finding things to do on a budget is a different story.

If you’re feeling adventurous, ditch the guided tours and do what the locals do. Here are 4 recommendations.

1. Relaxing By Lakes, Taking In Views

One of the really amazing things about this area of Japan is that it’s full of lakes, lush greenery, and lavender fields. Before you start going to restaurants and bars, have yourself a picnic in the Oishi Park area, which is on the west side of Lake Kawaguchiko.

If you’re there in June or July, you’ll be seated in a lavender field in full bloom. Across the lake, you’ll have an incredible view of the mountain, but don’t stop there.

Those that have traveled through mountainous regions a lot know that when you look back on your pictures, they don’t do the landscape justice. Mt. Fuji is a rare photogenic mountain and you could spend your entire trip there trying to get the perfect photo.

2. Get Yourself a Mount Fuji Pass

If you’re visiting for a few days, buy a Mount Fuji Pass. This will get you all around the region, where you’ll see more views, more immense nature, and all the rest of the major sights and attractions.

This is the only way you’ll be able to quickly take in the entire Kawaguchiko area in all its glory. Buy a 1, 2, or 3-day pass and you’ll have constant access to shops, amusement parks, and all of the surrounding areas.

3. Fantastic Museums

There are two museums in Kawaguchiko, the Music Forest Museum, and the Itchiku Kubota Art Museum.

First, the Music Forest Museum is located on a breathtaking garden inside a cool western-style building. There, you’ll see displays of music boxes and sand art concerts, which are held at different times throughout the day. You can also romp through their rose garden, which contains 720 varieties in full bloom when you visit in the summer.

The 3-Michelin-star Itchiku Kubota Art Museum is home to the world-renowned dyeing artist by the same name’s work. Kubota is famous for resurrecting an ancient dyeing style called tsujigahana.

4. World-Class Restaurants

Lastly, you’d be remiss to go to Kawaguchiko without checking out a few of its delicious restaurants. There’s something for whatever mood you’re in, so just select one of the ramen, Japanese BBQ, sushi, or izakaya spots and you’ll be well-nourished after a long day seeing the sights.

Some notable restaurants include Yorimoto, Dino Diner, Izakaya High Spirits, and many more.

No Shortage of Things to Do In Kawaguchiko

There really is no shortage of incredible things to do in Kawaguchiko. Mt. Fuji is unlike any other place on earth and a trip to Japan would be incomplete without seeing it.
