Most moms are already worried about a host of problems with their newborn. Travel might look like all those problems but on steroids.

For example, how will their baby handle flying? Can they nurse their child without getting in trouble?

And what about germs? Foods? Their daily routines? Traveling means throwing those things out the window, right?

Parents can explain their vacation plans to the doctor a few months before takeoff. This way if there’s something wrong the doctor can warn parents before they step out the door.

Remember to pack everything the baby needs for diaper changes. If they’re used to cloth diapers, they might need to switch to disposable diapers for travel. Parents should test out these diapers a week before the trip begins.

3. Use the Carry-On Wisely

If parents and baby are traveling on a plane, then the carry-on bag needs to be the diaper bag.

Think of it as the baby’s weekend bag. It should have diapers, wipes, pacifiers, toys, and a change of clothes.

For parents traveling together, use one bag for the baby and the other as mom and dad’s bag. It’s best to do this in case the bigger luggage gets lost.

4. Do Some Research Ahead of Time

Traveling with a newborn will be so much easier if parent’s do some research ahead of time. They should call hotels and car rentals to see about special help for babies. These could include car seats and cribs. Those are two big things parents don’t want to have to carry around on vacation.

They should also try to book flights earlier in the day. Most babies are happier and more well behaved in the morning. This way they won’t fuss as much on the flight.

5. Book a Window Seat

6. Unpack ASAP

When parents get to their hotel destination, it’s important to unpack the baby’s things. This will help the newborn get used to their new environment if there are some familiar things from home.

While they’re unpacking, parents need to choose certain areas as “baby areas,” like they do at home. Organize an area with baby’s clothing, diapers, and even bottles, baby food, and formula.

7. Get Creative About Nap Time

If parents are having a hard time getting their child to nap in a new environment, there are a few things they can do.

If all else fails, schedule days around naptimes back at the hotel.

8. Feeding the Baby on the Go

If the newborn is used to drinking formula, then parents should pack more than they’ll think they’ll need. They should also consider the quality of water at their vacation destination.
