Have you been cooped up in the house a lot lately? We get it — life happens. Between work and taking care of kids, you’ve probably fallen into a solid routine that doesn’t include a lot of spare time.

But being outside is good for you! If you have a little free time in your future, don’t spend it plopped down in front of the TV.

Decide What Activities You Want to Do

“Outdoor adventure” is such a broad term. So, it’s important that you decide what that means to you before you get too deep into planning.

Do you want to go hiking and camping? Or are you more of a surfer and stand up paddle boarder? You may even opt to hit the skies for a heart-stopping adventure of bungee jumping or skydiving.

Choose at least one activity you definitely want to do. Then, you can pick a few other secondary activities that you’d like to do but aren’t deal breakers if you can’t.

Pick A Location

Alright, so now that you have a good idea of what you want to do on your adventure in the great outdoors, it’s time to pick the location.

Start by deciding how far you’re willing to travel. If this will be a full week or two-week vacation, you may be willing to hop on a plane to reach the perfect destination. But, if it’s only a weekend or day trip, you’ll probably want to stick to locations in your immediate area.

Search for destinations that are known for that one must-do activity you picked. Then, narrow down your options by seeing which ones will allow you to do some of your secondary activities, too. And don’t forget to see what other activities that location has, so you can really fill up your itinerary.

If you’re planning on attending an overnight camp on your summer vacation from school, make sure you don’t just pick the first you find. There are likely tons of summer camps and teen programs in your area.

Write a Packing List

Once you’ve settled on your location and activities, you can use that to create your packing list. Write down everything you’ll need, even if you think you’ll remember without a list. It’s all too easy to forget one vital thing and end up having a rough time on your trip.

Have a Plan for Bad Weather

Unfortunately, mother nature stops for no one. If you’re planning a last-minute trip, make sure you check the weather forecast before you get too far in the planning process. If you’re planning a trip that’s a few weeks (or even months) away, be sure to check periodically as the date gets closer.

Make a plan if you notice rain is in the forecast. This may include postponing your trip, finding some rainy-day activities to keep you occupied if it’s only supposed to rain one day, or bringing special equipment to let you continue your adventure despite the rain.
