Buddhism is very strong in Thailand. So much so that in the past all males had to become Buddhist monks for at least a little while before turning 20. The palace is home to the most important statue of Buddha in all Thailand–The Emerald Buddha.

The Grand Palace is a magnificent sight you won’t soon forget. As such, it is part of many Thailand vacation packages so it is very easy to access.

2. The Temple of a Million Beers

With over 35,000 temples in the country, you have your pick of these fascinating buildings. One of the most unique, however, is the Temple of a Million Beers.

At first thought, you might be confused about what alcohol has to do with a religious building. The story is actually really cool. In 1984 a group of monks was looking to promote recycling and clean up the Sisaket area. They decided to start a “100 bottles of beer on the wall” project to accomplish their goals.

It grew until they ended up creating an entire temple, using over 1.5 million bottles in its construction. Even the toilets have beer bottles lining them! 

Using green and brown bottles they were able to create a woodsy look for this unique temple. This is a must-see for anyone interested in conservation and recycling. Even those who aren’t super interested in environmental issues will find this temple to be a fascinating sight.

3. Visit a Floating Market

What’s better than a colorful, flea market? One that floats!

Don’t forget your camera because there are as many photo ops as there are opportunities to score a good deal at a floating market. There are many floating markets around the country so you will probably be able to find one near you.
