Happy Camping: The Beginner’s Guide to Basic Camping Gear

basic camping gear

If you’re planning a camping trip, you’ll be in good company. That’s because around one in eight Americans go camping at least once a year.

As with any adventure you should have the right kit before you set off. You’ll need to stay safe and comfortable during your trip. If you’re unsure what to take with you, here’s a list of the basic camping gear you’ll need.

1. Basic Camping Gear Starts With Your Tent

Your tent is going to protect you from bad weather so that you stay dry and warm. Select a tent that’s not too cramped. Make sure it’s long enough for you to lie in comfortably.

Go for a tent that offers decent ventilation. If you’re taking the kids, you could choose a cabin-style tent.

If you’re backpacking, choose a tent that’s lightweight. That means that each person in the party should be carrying no more than two pounds of packed-tent weight.

2. Something to Sleep in

A great sleeping bag is vital for a good night’s rest. Go for one that will be able to cope with the coldest temperatures you’re likely to face. You could also buy a bag liner to provide extra warmth.

If the outdoor temperature is unlikely to fall below fifty degrees Fahrenheit, you could choose a cheaper rectangular bag. For colder weather, go for a mummy shaped bag. These also tend to take up less space and are usually lighter

3. A Backpack

Last year, Americans spent more than six hundred million dollars on backpacks. This meant they were the top-selling product category in overall camping equipment sales. Go for something light and with plenty of pockets.

You’ll be packing your whole home into your backpack. Imagine you were leaving all your possessions in a storage unit like the ones found at www.gotstorageyet.com. Leave everything you don’t need there and just bring the essentials.

4. A First Aid Kit

You may often get cuts and insect bites while camping. Make sure your first aid kit has plenty of bandages, pain-relievers, and antiseptic cream. You should also bring some antihistamine tablets.

5. Cooking Appliances

A stove is essential for making meals. You can also use it to purify water and make warm drinks. If you’re car camping, a large dual-burner propane stove would be a good choice.

If you’re backpacking, go for a lightweight liquid-fuel or canister stove. Integrated canister systems are also available. Bring plastic cutlery, bowls, and cups. Remember to bring one sharp knife and a cooking pot.

6. A Lantern or Flashlight

These can be used as signal devices in an emergency situation. A headlamp lets you keep your hands free when it’s dark. A battery-powered lantern is useful for when you’re eating or for finding things inside the tent.
